Tennis Completes Day One Of Eck Classic

Oct. 15, 2004

South Bend, Ind. – The University of Kansas tennis team completed day one of the Eck Classic Invitational Friday at the Courtney Tennis Center in South Bend, Ind. The team combined for a 1-9 record in singles competition and a 0-3 record in doubles.

Kansas’ lone victory came from freshman Stephanie Smith. Smith edged Michigan State’s Shelley Brady in a hard-fought match, 7-6, 6-4. Senior Christine Skoda lost a three-set match to Michigan State’s Keri Thompson, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-4).

“Against Ohio State, we missed out on a few opportunities to gain an advantage and create better situations,” said head coach Amy Hall-Holt. “We played a lot better as a team against Michigan State. I thought that Stephanie (Smith) played an outstanding match and Christine (Skoda) also played much better (against Michigan State).”

The `Hawks are scheduled to play six singles matches tomorrow against Virginia, and in doubles competition, the Jayhawks will play three matches against both Virginia and Michigan State. Following the Eck Classic, the Jayhawks will conclude their fall season at the ITA Regional tournament in Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 20-24.
