Oct. 15, 2008

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Three members of the Kansas tennis team competed in the qualifying round of the ITA Tennis Central Regionals Wednesday in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Senior Yuliana Svistun and sophomore Maria Martinez both won their first matches, while freshman Erin Wilbert advanced to the round of 32 by default. Svistun defeated Kiser of Air Force (6-0, 6-2) and Martinez beat Utah’s Tukuafu (6-3, 6-0).

All three Jayhawks were eliminated after losing their second matches of the day, however. Svistun dropped her second match to Huet from Oklahoma (6-4, 6-3), Martinez fell to Holt from Nebraska (6-1, 6-1) and Wilbert was knocked out by Wichita State’s Hanisch (6-2, 6-2).

Svistun will play again tomorrow when she and her doubles partner, freshman Kate Morozova, compete in the main draw of the doubles bracket. The doubles tandem of senior Edina Horvath and junior Kunigunda Dorn will also play.

Horvath, Dorn and Morozova will all compete in the main draw of the singles bracket Thursday as well. Match times have not yet been set.
