Oct. 16, 2007

LAWRENCE, Kan. —

Following a rare weekend off from competition, the University of Kansas tennis team will travel to Tulsa, Okla. for the ITA Central Region Championships on Oct. 17-21. The event will get underway on Wednesday with qualifying play, while main-draw action will begin on Thursday.

Leading KU at the Championships will be its 36th-ranked doubles tandem of senior Elizaveta Avdeeva and junior Edina Horvath. The duo, which is seeded second in the main draw, will attempt to defend their title from last year’s event, which they captured by defeating Arkansas’ team of Airepition and Franco, 8-3.

Kansas will send juniors Yuliana Svistun and Edina Horvath and freshman Maria Martinez to compete in the 44-player qualifying singles bracket. Players must win two matches in order to advance to the main draw. Eleven individuals will then move on to the main draw, which will consist of 64 athletes, including Avdeeva and sophomore Kunigunda Dorn, who have already earned a spot in the main bracket.

The Jayhawks have garnered numerous accomplishments already this fall, highlighted by Svistun’s Flight E singles championships at the Hoosier Classic and Avdeeva and Horvath’s second-place finish at the Cissie Leary Invitational.
