Junior Edina Horvath and freshman Maria Martinez each moved within one win of joining Svistun in the main draw, but they both fell in their second match of the day.

Svistun, who improved to 8-1 in singles action this fall, opened the day by defeating Air Force’s Christine Abayan, 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (5), before handling Colorado’s Jendian Franzi, 6-3, 6-2, to advance.

After winning her opening contest over BYU’s Dolly Chang, Horvath was eliminated in a thrilling three-set match by Colorado’s Gleisy Torres Torres, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (8).

Horvath, however, will have a chance to redeem herself as she and senior Elizaveta Avdeeva, who won the doubles championship at last year’s event and are seeded second this season, open up play in the main doubles draw later this week.

The main singles draw will get underway on Thursday as Svistun will join Avdeeva and sophomore Kunigunda Dorn, who had already earned a spot in the bracket, in representing KU.
