Jayhawks Look to End Fall Season on High Note

Oct. 23, 2009

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas men’s golf team will try to rebound from its seventh-place finish in its last event and finish the fall portion of its schedule on a high note as they travel to compete in the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate Oct. 26-27 at New Mexico State Golf Course.

Head Coach Kit Grove will have a homecoming of sorts as Grove played his first collegiate season at New Mexico State prior to transferring to Kansas.

“I haven’t been back in a few years, but we will be playing a solid course that allows you to score well if you position the ball well,” said Grove.

Grove will count on the same lineup he utilized in the Jayhawks’ last event, led by junior Nate Barbee. Barbee leads the squad in scoring average and has earned a top-20 finish in each of the Jayhawks four events this fall.

He will be joined in the lineup by senior Bryan Hackenberg, junior Jeff Bell and freshmen Chris Gilbert and Alex Gutesha.

The Jayhawks hold a 32-10-4 head-to-head record against their opponents this year and have placed in the top-three on three different occasions.

The 17-team field, featuring participants from all over the country, will play 54 holes on Oct. 26, followed by the final round of Oct. 27.

The tournament was founded in 1966 and famous winners have included three-time U.S. Open winner Hale Irwin and ESPN.com writer Rick Reilly.
