AUBURN, Ala., — Emily Powers shot a one-over-par 73 on day one of The Derby as the Kansas women’s golf team finds itself in twelfth place heading into Saturday’s second round. As a team, the Jayhawks shot a 311 at the par-72, 6,301 yard Auburn University Club at Yarbrough Farms.

Powers, a junior, will look for her fourth top-10 performance of the season after Friday’s round of 73 puts her in a tie for eighth place individually. Sophomore Meghna Bal shot a 77, good for a tie for 32nd. Rounding out the lineup for KU were sophomores Grace Thiry (79, T46) and Jennifer Clark (82, T69) and junior Meghan Gockel (83, T78).

The 17-team field includes 13 of the top 50 teams in the country, according to GolfStat.com. Number seven ranked Virginia finished Friday in first place after shooting a one-over-par 289 as a team.
