Jayhawk Baseball Scrimmage Ends in Tie

Oct. 28, 2004

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Midwest Team and the West Team battled to a 4-4 tie on Wednesday at Hoglund Ballpark in game two of Jayhawk Baseball’s final series of fall practice. Kansas will wrap up Fall Ball on Thursday afternoon with its final scrimmage of the semester at 4:30 p.m. at Hoglund Ballpark.

Wednesday’s starting pitchers Clint Schambach (Elgin, Ill.) and Sean Land (Greenwood, Mo.) were locked in a pitcher’s duel until the top of the sixth inning, when the West Team was able to break through on Land. In the inning, walks to freshman infielder Erik Morrison (Arroyo Grande, Calif.) and senior infielder Andy Scholl (Albuquerque, N.M.) and a single by junior shortstop Ritchie Price (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) loaded the bases for the West. Senior catcher Sean Richardson (Vista, Calif.) collected a RBI on a bases loaded walk and senior infielder Travis Dunlap plated two more runs with a single to left field to give the West Team a 4-1 lead.

The Midwest Team rebounded to tie the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth, by taking advantage of three West Team defensive miscues in the inning. With one out and runners on the corners, infielder Ian Keitzman hit a line drive doubel down the right field line that scored a pair. The Midwest added a run later in the inning on a passed ball by Richardson.

The Midwest Team threated to score in both the eight and ninth innings, but each time, relief pitcher Ryotaro Hayakawa (Narita, Japan) worked out of a jam to preserve the tie. Junior closer Don Czyz (Overland Park, Kan.) pitched two scoreless innings for the Midwest Team and recorded four strikeouts.

At the plate for the West Team, senior outfielder Jake Kauzlarich (Seattle, Wash.) led the way with three hits, while Price, Dunlap and Scholl each posted two hits. Senior infielder Mike Dudley (Pueblo, Colo.), freshman infielder Brock Simpson (Topeka, Kan.) and Keitzman each had two hits apiece for the Midwest Team.
