Kansas Concludes Palmetto Intercollegiate with Seventh-Place Finish

Oct. 29, 2012

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Kansas junior Thanuttra “Fhong” Boonraksasat lead KU after shooting a three-round total score of 219 (+3) at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Oak Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C., Monday. The Jayhawks improved from yesterday’s 10th-place first round finish and closed out the tournament in seventh place with a three-round total score of 902 (+38).

Boonraksasat was in eighth after the second round was suspended yesterday due to darkness, but closed the tournament tying for fifth among individuals, alongside Vanessa Koechli of College of Charleston and Teresa Urquizu and Brook Bellomy of Campbell. Boonraksasat carded one eagle and one birdie on the day. Maria Jose Benavides of Campbell won the event with a 3-under 213.

“Fhong had a great tournament individually,” KU head coach Erin O’Neil said. “She played steady every round and finished strong today with an eagle on the 17th hole.”

Kansas freshman Yupaporn Kawinpakorn tied 32nd among individuals shooting a 227 (+11), while junior Meghan Potee and senior Audrey Yowell tied for 39th shooting a 228 (+12), one shot behind Kawinpakorn. Sophomore Gabby DiMarco finished 84th among individuals with a 243 (+27).

“It was pretty windy today which can be a challenge mentally,” O’Neil said. “But we fought back after a rough start to shoot a respectable score.”

Potee and Yowell carded four birdies on the day, while Kawinpakorn had two birdies and DiMarco closed the tournament out with one their final round.

“We showed much improvement this fall and I am very proud of what we have accomplished so far,” O’Neil said of her team which won two tournaments and had four top-10 finishes in five events this fall. “The team will need to continue to work hard in the off season so that we can come back even stronger this spring.”
