Jayhawks Qualify for 10th Consecutive Big 12 Soccer Championship

Oct. 30, 2009

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

After defeating No. 20 Missouri in the final match of the regular season, the Kansas soccer team will face the Tigers again in less than a week. The second round of the Border Showdown on the soccer field will take place in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Soccer Championship in San Antonio, Texas on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 5:30 p.m.

The Jayhawks (12-7-1 overall, 4-6 in the Big 12) finished the regular season tied for seventh with Texas Tech (3-4-3) and Baylor (3-4-3).

The first step in the Big 12 tiebreaker procedure is a mini round-robin among tied teams. All three teams finished 1-1 against each other in the round robin. The second step is goal differential in which all three remained tied with a 0 differential versus the other two tied teams. The third step compares “goals scored against” among the tied teams. Baylor gave up the fewest goals with two combined against Kansas and Texas Tech to earn the No. 7 seed. At that point the tiebreaker reverts to head-to-head competition. Kansas beat Texas Tech to garner the No. 8 and final seed in the championship.

Kansas has qualified for the Big 12 Soccer Championship 10 straight years, but has yet to advance to the championship round. KU was eliminated in a shootout last season by tournament champion Missouri in the semifinal round after the teams played to a 1-1 tie in double overtime.

Live stats and free live video streaming of quarterfinal and semifinal action of the championship will be available at Big12Sports.com. The final match on Sunday, Nov. 8 is set for live broadcast at 1 p.m. (CT) on FSN.
