KU Excels at Opening Day of Seminole Invitational

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Highlighted by a doubles championship-match berth by the University of Kansas’ doubles tandem of junior Yuliana Svistun and sophomore Kunigunda Dorn, the Jayhawks opened their final tournament of the fall in impressive fashion at the FSU Seminole Invitational on Friday.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Dorn and Svistun, playing together for just the third time this season, won two matches in the Gold doubles bracket to reach the final. In the opening round, the two defeated Florida State’s Marobela and Walter, 8-6, before winning a thrilling tiebreak match over New Mexico’s Abou-Zekry and Ryba, 9-8 (6) in the semifinals.

The pair will take on a mixed duo made up of FloridaState’s Suess and Georgia Tech’s Hickey in the championship contest.

Svistun also reached the semifinals of the Black bracket, and freshman Maria Martinez reached the final four of the Pink singles draw as well. A Ufa, Russia native, Svistun won her opening-round match against New Mexico’s Scott, 6-0, 6-2, while Martinez defeated South Carolina State’s Davidova.

With the win, Svistun improved her team-best singles record to 9-3 this fall.

In other singles action, freshman Mymee Tokuda won a round-robin match in the Yellow draw over South Carolina State’s Komlosova, 7-6 (2), 6-3.

Martinez and Tokuda also nearly advanced to the finals of the Black doubles bracket after a first-round win over SCSU’s Davidova and Komlosova. However, the tandem was eliminated in the semifinals.

In other action for KU, junior Edina Horvath fell in her first singles match of the day, while the Jayhawks’ top doubles-tandem of Horvath and Avdeeva also was eliminated in the opening round.

Horvath will look to bounce back as she begins consolation singles play on Saturday.
