Sophomore Danielle McCray scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Sade Morris added 15 points as the <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>University of Kansas women’s basketball team opened the exhibition season by defeating Pittsburg State, 82-48, Sunday afternoon at Allen Fieldhouse. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Kansas led 29-18 at halftime, and stormed out of the locker room with an 8-0 run to begin the second half. The Jayhawks shot an impressive 53.8% (14-for-26) in outscoring PittsburgState 53-30 in the second half to put the game out of reach.

For the game, the Jayhawks out-rebounded the Gorillas 55-31 and had 23 offensive rebounds to the PSU’s 11. Senior forward Taylor McIntosh cleaned up on the glass, securing 11 rebounds.

McCray and Morris led a balanced offensive attack that produced 53 second half points. The Jayhawks scored 29 points from the foul line, shooting at a 78 percent clip from the charity stripe.

Sophomore Porscha Weddington added eight points on 3-of-6 shooting, while junior Ivana Catic chipped in seven points in 31 minutes on the floor.

Three freshmen made their Kansas debuts, led by nine points from forward Nicollette Smith. Along with Smith, post Krysten Boogaard and guard Chakeitha Weldon each saw action in the contest. Overall, the freshmen class combined for 17 points in 26 minutes of play.

The Jayhawks wrap up exhibition play on Thursday, when they will take on EmporiaState at 7 p.m., at Allen Fieldhouse.
