Nov. 5, 2010

SAN DIEGO –

Five Kansas tennis players and two doubles teams advanced to the semifinals of their respective brackets Friday afternoon in San Diego, at the San Diego State Fall Classic II, giving the Jayhawks their strongest opening of the fall 2010 season.

Competing against the host Aztecs, San Diego, Loyola Marymount, UC Irvine, Washington and Auburn at the Aztec Tennis Center, the Jayhawks derailed SDSU’s near-perfect day when Dylan Windom and Paulina Los defeated Emma Cioffi and Olivia Colman 8-6 in the Red Doubles Draw. Ekaterina Morozova and Erin Wilbert also tallied a doubles win with an 8-5 defeat over a team from Washington.

KU’s other two doubles teams both fell to teams of sisters from SDSU and UCI Irvine. Sara Lazarevic and Monica Pezzotti dropped a tough match to Southwest Regional Finalists Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison of SDSU and Victoria Khanevskaya and Kate Goff were defeated by Hayley Young and Miranda Young of UC Irvine.

In singles play, Morozova and Lazarevic both advanced to the semifinals of the Red Singles Draw. Morozova easily downed Auburn’s Taylor Schreimann, 6-2, 6-1 to advance, while Lazarevic rebounded from a first set loss to LMU’s Miya Jin to go on to win 0-6, 6-3, 6-4. Lazarevic will take on the Aztec’s top singles player Saturday when she squares off against No. 51 Julia Trunk.

In the Gold Singles Draw, Wilbert outlasted Irvine’s Franziska Goettsching going 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-4.

Pezzotti defeated Irvine’s Hannah Holiday 6-3, 6-2 in the Silver Draw, and Dylan Windom moved on to the next round in the Pink Draw with a 6-2, 6-2 win over LMU’s Shauna Morgan.

Los, Goff and Khanevskaya all fell in their opening matches and will compete in the consolation brackets Saturday. Los fell to Colman 6-4, 6-2 in the Pink Draw and Goff was shutout 6-0, 6-0 by Washington’s Lina Xu.

Khanevskaya ended her streak of three straight finals appearances when she dropped her opening match to the nation’s 65th-ranked player. SDSU’s Alicia Aguilar defeated Khanevskaya 6-0, 6-2.

The event continues Saturday morning, at 9 a.m. PT at the Aztec Tennis Center.
