Nov. 12, 2004

Lawrence, Kan. — University of Kansas women’s basketball head coach Bonnie Henrickson signed the third member of her 2005 recruiting class Friday when Sophronia Sallard (Suh-FRONE-ya SUH-lard) signed a national letter-of-intent to play for the Jayhawks, Friday.

Sallard, a 5-10 small forward from Syracuse, N.Y., is rated as the No. 25 player in the nation by Blue Star recruiting service, as well as the No. 88 player overall and No. 15 wing player in the country by Mike White’s adidas Top 10 All-Star Girls Report. As a junior, Sallard averaged 17 points and nine rebounds per game for Nottingham High School, and was named Colonial American League Player of the Year.

“Sophronia is a player with tremendous athletic ability and we are excited to sign a player of her caliber,” Henrickson said. “She can knock down mid-range and outside shots, create for herself and finish at the basket. Her playmaking skills and passing skills are impressive. One thing that sets her apart is her unselfishness. She plays for coach Greg Jones at one of the best high schools in the country, who has really worked to develop her as a player.”

Sallard’s impressive resume includes a selection to the class AA All-State second team as a junior and to the fifth team as a sophomore. Both years, she was also named first team all-region. In addition, she was named Metro Player of the Year, first team all-league and fifth team Street & Smith All-American as a junior. This past summer, she participated in the Nike All-America Camp.

Sallard chose Kansas after receiving offers from Kentucky, Syracuse, UAB and Virginia among others.

Kansas is expected to sign at one more student-athlete in the early signing period, which ends Wednesday, Nov. 17.
