LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Kansas defeated a tough Washburn team 79-70, Sunday in Allen Fieldhouse in its final tune-up before its regular season opener.

Senior Wayne Simien led five Jayhawks in double figures with 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Fellow senior Keith Langford chipped in with 11 points, while sophomore J.R. Giddens, junior Christian Moody and senior Aaron Miles added 10 each. Freshman guard Russell Robinson had a good showing off the bench, with seven points and dishing out four assists.

In a game that saw five ties and seven lead changes, the Icabods went into the half trailing by only five at 42-37. Four Washburn seniors carried the Icabods in the scoring column. Travis Robbins led all scorers with 14 points, and had a team-high six rebounds, while Karlton Mims added 12 points. Carl Jenkins and Randy Brown came off the bench to combine for 23 points.

“Washburn played really well tonight,” Kansas head coach Bill Self said. “We weren’t nearly as into the game as we were last week. This will be good for us in the long run. We know we have to play better and improve because Vermont will be ready to come out and play hard.”

The Jayhawks connected on just 5-of-16 from three-point range and made only 26-of-40 free throw attempts.

Kansas rounds out the exhibition season with a 6-0 record, after winning two at home and four on a pre-season Canadian trip. The Jayhawks will open the 2004-05 regular season campaign when Vermont comes to Lawrence Friday, Nov. 19, for a 7 p.m. tip.
