Five Jayhawks Named Academic All-Big 12

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Five University of Kansas volleyball players were among the 50 student-athletes named to the 2006 Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball Team by the league office Tuesday. Jayhawk seniors Jana Correa, Jamie Mathewson and Megan Hill, junior Emily Brown and sophomore Savannah Noyes were each honored for their performance on the court and in the classroom.

Correa and Mathewson earned first-team honors for the third consecutive season while Brown was placed on the academic first team for the second time in her career. Noyes, an Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection, and Hill, a second team honoree, each received the first awards of their careers.

Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the volleyball academic all-league team consisted of 42 first team members combined with eight on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
