Jayhawks complete Day One at the Minnesota Invite

The No. 23 Kansas swimming and diving team completed the first day of competition at the Minnesota Invite at the University Aquatics Center. The three-day event consists of 12 teams.

The highlight of the day came in the 400 medley relay. The team of junior Jenny Short, freshman Danielle Herrmann, freshman Ashley Leidigh, and sophomore Terri Schramka finished second in the race. The team finished the race in 3:44.94. The time set a new KU record and is the eighth fastest time in the country.

Leading the Jayhawks in the 200 free relay was freshman Ashley Leidigh, sophomore Terri Schramka, senior Gina Gnatzig, and senior Lindsey Urbatchka who finished the race in 1:35.31 to earn fifth place. Kansas also entered three other teams in the race which finished 13th, 16th, and 24th.

Gnatzig lead the `Hawks in the 500 free “A” Final. The Whitewater, Wisc. native finished sixth with a time of 4:54.18. Schramka finished eighth with a time of 5:01.98. In the “B” finals, freshman Molly Brammer finished the race in 4:57.22 to earn a 12th place finish. Junior Lia Pogioli finished the race in 5:00.89 to earn a 16th place finish.

In the 200 IM, Herrmann finished the race with a time of 2:05.23 to earn a seventh place finish. Freshman Shanna Bradbury earned a 10th place finish with a time of 2:05.80. Senior Emily Rusch finished the race with a time of 2:08.18 to earn a 15th place finish.

Leidigh was the top finisher for the Jayhawks in the 50 free. The Merriam, Kan., native finished the race in 23.87 to tie for sixth place in the “A” final. Urbatchka finished the race in 24.15 in the “B” final to earn a 14th place finish. Junior Tricia Tindall finished the race in 24.89 to earn 24th place in the “C” final.

In diving action, junior Shelby Noonan finished fourth in the three-meter competition with a score of 301.70.

In other swimming news, the CSCAA College Swimming poll released Nov. 17, ranked the Jayhawks No. 23 moving them up one spot after wins against Missouri State and Iowa.
