Kansas Victorious in Seven Events After Friday Finals

GAMBIER, Ohio – The University of Kansas swimmers are currently in second-place with 550 points at the Nike Cup-Kenyon behind the University of Pennsylvania (589) and ahead of Kenyon College (530) after Friday’s final events. John Hopkins University sits in fourth-place with 146 points.

Following Friday’s finals, Kansas swimmers placed first in every final event but one. Of the seven victorious events, six new Kenyon Athletic Center Natatorium records were set by Jayhawk swimmers.

Sophomore

Ashley Leidigh captured a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.09), out swimming the Pennsylvania and Kenyon College competition in the finals of the event.

In the 200-yard freestyle event, sophomore

Maria Mayrovich raced to a first-place finish (1:49.52) to set a new KAC pool record, while junior Terri Schramka added depth in the event with a 1:54.13, fourth-place finish. Mayrovich stacked another victory and pool record in the 50-yard freestyle (23.39) to top off the night.

Sophomore

Danielle Herrmann led the way in the 100-yard breaststroke capturing a new pool record (1:04.80) after sweeping the event in the preliminaries Friday. Herrmann repeated in the 400-yard IM (4:27.05), racing to a first-place finish and yet another KAC pool record. Finishing in second-place behind Herrmann was freshman and Lawrence native Ashley Robinson. Robinson swam her way to a 4:27.76 in the event.

Senior captain

Jenny Short and junior Lauren Bonfe went one-two in the 100-yard backstroke with times of 57.07 and 57.43, respectively. Short’s victory in the backstroke awarded her one of the team’s six pool records.

“We had an excellent day two at Kenyon,” head coach

Clark Campbell said. “Several more pool records were established by Jayhawk athletes and we are continuing to race well as a team. The team race is getting very close and it should make for an exciting day three.”

In the last finals event of the evening, the Kansas “A” relay collaborated to set the sixth pool record of the night with a victory in the 400-yard medley relay (3:48.63). Short, Herrmann, Leidigh and Mayrovich represented the Jayhawks in the relay.
