Swimming and Diving to Conclude Fall Season at Kenyon Invite

Dec. 2, 2008

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas (5-2) swimming and diving will wrap-up its fall campaign this week with a three-day event at the Kenyon Invitational in Gambier, Ohio. Hosted by Division III Kenyon College, the invitational will begin Thursday evening and end Saturday night at the Kenyon Athletic Center.

KU, currently receiving votes in the latest poll, has won its last three duals, all by at least 37 points. The other participants in the Kenyon Invite, in addition to Kenyon College, are Carnegie-Mellon, Colgate, Davidson, Johns Hopkins and Pennsylvania. Davidson is ranked 22nd in the latest CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Poll. Kenyon is the top ranked Division III squad. Johns Hopkins and Carnegie-Mellon are ranked 8th and 13th, respectively, in the Division III poll.

“We use the fall invitational, this year it is the Kenyon Invite, as a mid-term exam,” said Kansas head coach Clark Campbell. “We want to see how each athlete is responding to their training over the course of the year. We’ve had good success with this in the past. We’ve had people put up lifetime best times, but our real goal is to get season-best times so that we can see where we are at the mid-point in the season.”

The highlight of the Jayhawk fall season was the season-opening upset of the 16th-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils. Kansas also placed in a tie for third at the Big 12 Relays.

“I’ve been very pleased (with the fall),” said Campbell. “We had seven back-to-back weeks of racing. It was almost like a mini-Tour de France in swimming. We had a lot of racing back-to-back, but we had good training in between the racing. We’ll give the team a little time to freshen up, but as coaches we feel that we could have a nice snap and reel off some good times.”

Following the Kenyon Invite, Kansas will be out of action until January. KU’s next dual will be at Florida International on January 9, 2009. The Jayhawks next home action will be on January 24 when they host South Dakota and Northern Iowa in a triangular meet.
