Kansas senior Iuliia Kuzhil’s placed second in the 100-meter backstroke while several other Jayhawks recorded NCAA ‘B’ qualification times to help KU to complete the second day of the Georgia Fall Invitational Saturday at Gabrielsen Natatorium.

KU sits in fifth-place with 264 points, ranking ahead of Harvard (176) and Minnesota (118). The host school, Georgia, leads the way with 841 points.

“This was our best day yet,” Kansas head coach Clark Campbell said. “We had lots of ‘B’ cuts made and Iuliia’s time in the 100 backstroke is currently one of the top 10 times nationally.”

Kuzhil’s time of 53.05 in the 100 backstroke is the third-fastest in the country this season, ranking behind Stanford’s Elizabeth Webb (52.76) and the meet’s event winner, Georgia’s Megan Romano (52.99). Kuzhil’s time easily met the NCAA ‘B’ qualifying standard.

The Kansas senior also helped the Kansas 200 medley relay team record an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time in their event at 1:42.67. Fellow Jayhawks Joy Bunting, Abigail Anderson and Brooke Brull also swam with Kuzhil on the team, which placed eighth in the event.

KU’s 800 free relay team of Morgan Sharp, Rebecca Swank, Shannon Garlie and Brull took seventh in their event and also recorded an NCAA ‘B’ time of 7:20.98.

Three other Jayhawks recorded ‘B’ times Saturday. Bunting and junior Stephanie Payne placed sixth and seventh in the 400 IM final, recording times of 4:17.23 and 4:17.33, respectively. Anderson also scored a ‘B’ time in the 100 backstroke, capturing eighth with a time of 54.79.
