RCW: A Look Back 3.23
Kansas first fielded a men’s golf team in the spring of 1935. As this year’s team begins competition, let’s take A Look Back at an artifact on exhibit in the Booth Family Hall of Athletics.
This “Denny Shute Medalist” golf iron is displayed in the 1930-39 Story of Sport exhibit. It is a 7-iron/Mashie-Niblick club. The shaft is covered by a thin wood veneer, wrapped with leather at the top for the grip. A “Mashie-Niblick” has a loft of about 41 degrees, which used to be considered a 7-iron; a modern comparison would be the 9-iron.
