By Laptops Early Light – With an early morning departure from Kansas City International Airport for the first softball action of the season at Stetson University’s Leadoff Classic in DeLand, Florida, laptop and iPad screens illuminated KU sophomores Jennifer Marwitz and Alexis Reid, freshman Becki Monaghan and junior Jessie Roane as they awaited a flight to Orlando, Florida, on Thursday, February 9.

Sunny Florida Swings – Softball senior Lily Behrmann hit balls off of a batting tee at Stetson University’s Patricia Wilson Field with freshman teammate Becki Monaghan as the sun set on KU’s practice session in DeLand, Florida, on Thursday, February 9, ahead of the three-day Leadoff Classic in which the Jayhawks went 5-0 to open their season.

Down the Line – Sophomore Alexis Reid blasted a plastic softball back to student assistant coach Chaley Brickey along a taut cable that helps a batter make solid contact and drive the ball straight down the line during KU’s practice at Stetson University’s Patricia Wilson Field in DeLand, Florida, on Thursday, February 9.

Outdoor Tennis in February? – With the temperature climbing to 72 degrees in Lawrence on February 11, the Saturday match against Arkansas was moved to the six outdoor courts at the new Jayhawk Tennis Center at Rock Chalk Park. After dropping the first set of her singles’ match, freshman Tatiana Nikolaeva stormed back to win the final two sets, and the match, as the setting winter sun began to cast long shadows on the bright blue courts.

Off the Mats – With cold weather making it impossible to practice outdoors on Friday, February 3, junior Kallie Gonzales and her teammates used mats and a vinyl backdrop in the Anschutz Sports Pavilion to hone their golf swings. The Jayhawks open the spring season at the two-day Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Arizona, on Sunday, February 26.
