Each week the Bird’s Eye View captures some of the best moments for Kansas Athletics. From the playing field, practice gym or behind the scenes, don’t miss this exclusive perspective into the Kansas Jayhawks. king's castle

KING’S CASTLE – On a cold, dreary and blustery day with only the decathlon and heptathlon athletes competing on the first day of the 91st Kansas Relays presented by RCB Bank on Wednesday, April 18, sophomore Gleb Dudarev, KU’s hammer throwing king, was alone at work in his castle, the huge throws cage at Rock Chalk Park. Using two hammers for his practice, Dudarev would shed his gloves and stocking cap and let both implements fly. Donning his gloves and cap, Dudarev would walk out, pick up the hammers, walk back and make the same two throws over and over. Two days later, Dudarev broke the school, Relays and facility record in the hammer throw. His mark of 78.04 meters (256-0 ft.) is No. 1 in the NCAA for the year, No. 5 in the world for the year and the No. 5 NCAA all-time mark.

FLY FREE – As part of his pre-throw routine, senior discus thrower Nicolai Ceban tossed his implement into the air almost as a reminder to his discus to fly free. Ceban won the open college event with a throw that flew free over 54.16 meters (177-08 ft.) on Friday, April 20, during the 91st Kansas Relays presented by RCB Bank at Rock Chalk Park.

WATER WHIRL – During Saturday’s men’s Quadrangular discus competition between Kansas, Nebraska, Harvard and Kansas State, rain filled the hammer throw circle which reflected the figure of Jayhawk freshman George Evans as he made his final move through the discus circle to unleash a throw during the 91st Kansas Relays presented by RCB Bank at Rock Chalk Park on Saturday, April 21. Evans took second place to Olympian Mason Finley but was the top collegiate finisher with a mark of 55.73 meters (182-10 ft.).
