Kansas’ Big Jay to Compete in the 2013 Capital One Challenge

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Big Jay, the University of Kansas’ mascot, has been named to the 2013 Capital One All-America Mascot Team. For 15 weeks starting in September, Big Jay will compete in the 2013 Capital One Mascot Challenge along with the other team members. Ultimately, a winner will be determined with the champion accumulating the most total points earned during the different phases of voting.

The three-month long “regular-season-voting phase” runs from Sept. 2 to Nov. 24 and pits some of the elite mascots from across the country against one other in head-to-head voting competition, with the victor earning the most points.

Big Jay’s regular-season schedule includes match-ups against the following:

  • Week 1 vs. LSU Tigers (Mike the Tiger)
  • Week 2 vs. Toledo Rockets (Rocky the Rocket)
  • Week 3 vs. Tennessee Vols (Smokey)
  • Week 4 vs. USF Bulls (Rocky D. Bull)
  • Week 5 vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders (The Masked Rider)
  • Week 6 vs. Colorado State Rams (Cam the Ram)
  • Week 7 vs. Virginia Tech Hokies (HokieBird)
  • Week 8 vs. Arizona Wildcats (Wilbur and Wilma)
  • Week 9 vs. Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (Big Red)
  • Week 10 vs. Michigan State Spartans (Sparty)
  • Week 11 vs. Oregon Ducks (The Duck)
  • Week 12 vs. Boston College Eagles (Baldwin the Eagle)

Mascots earn points in three different ways:

Challenge Level 1: Click the “vote” button to vote for the applicable mascot. The
Mascot will automatically receive one (1) point.

Challenge Level 2: Visit www.capitalonebowl.com to view the Level 2 Challenge for
the applicable voting period. Complete and post the Challenge on Facebook or Twitter
including the mascot’s hashtag. For each approved Level 2 Challenge, the applicable mascot will receive twenty-five (25) points.

Challenge Level 3: Visit www.capitalonebowl.com to view the Level 3 Challenge for
the applicable voting period. Complete and post the Challenge on Facebook, Twitter,
and/or Instagram, including the mascot’s hashtag. For each approved Level 3 Challenge, the applicable mascot will receive one hundred (100) points.

After the initial 12 weeks of competition, the eight mascots who earned the most points in the regular season will advance to the “playoffs-voting phase”. Those eight participants will be seeded based on their win-loss record during the regular season voting phase. Action continues when the top-four point earners move on to week 14 of competition. The 2013 Capital One Challenge culminates with the top-two mascot point earners battling it out for the crown via social media from Dec. 9-15. The winner will be determined between Dec. 16 and 22 and formally announced on Jan. 1, 2014 at the Capital One Bowl in Orlando, Fla.
