Gardner Adds to Weekly Accolades with Big 12 Honor

IRVING, Texas – Kansas junior Chelsea Gardner collected another weekly accolade after being named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week as announced by the conference Monday afternoon. It was the second Big 12 weekly award for Gardner this season.

The award from the league office came hours after Gardner was tabbed as espnW’s National Player of the Week. The DeSoto, Texas, led the Jayhawks in a 76-60 upset over then-No. 7 Baylor with her fifth double-double of the season and 11th of her career. Gardner finished the afternoon with 28 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots. She made a career-high 12 field goals en route to her 28-point performance over the Lady Bears.

Kansas’ win over Baylor is the first over a top 10 ranked opponent since March 20, 2012, when they defeated No. 7/8 Delaware in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The last time the Jayhawks defeated a top-10 team in the regular season was also against Baylor, when they defeated the No. 5/6 Lady Bears in Allen Fieldhouse on March 4, 2009.

Gardner also paced the Jayhawks with 11 points in a mid-week contest at Texas last Wednesday.

The Jayhawks ready to face another top 10 ranked opponent this week when No. 9 Oklahoma State comes to Allen Fieldhouse on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m.
