Five Kansas Women’s Golfers Named Academic All -Big 12 First Team

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Five Kansas women’s golfers were named to the 2015 Academic All-Big 12 First Team, the conference office announced Friday.
Jayhawk seniors Gabriella DiMarco, Michelle Woods, Minami Levonowich and Carly Humes and junior Yupaporn Kawinpakorn were named to the 2015 Academic All-Big 12 honorees. There were 27 women’s golf academic all-league student-athletes named with 24 first team members and three on the second squad.
For the second consecutive year, Levonowich and Kawinpakorn were named Academic All-Big 12 First Team. DiMarco is making her second appearance on the academic all-conference first team as well as she was named to the squad in 2013. Woods and Humes are appearing on the team for the first time.
“Our players do an excellent job of balancing the demands of school and golf and I am very proud of their accomplishments in the classroom,” KU head coach Erin O’Neil said.
Since the Big 12 Conference began in 1996-97, Kansas has had a total of 64 women’s golf Academic All-Big 12 honorees. O’Neil has had 41 of those selections in her 11 seasons at KU and has had at least two honorees every year. KU’s five selections in 2015 are the most Academic All Big-12 selections since 2010 when the Jayhawks also had five honorees.
To qualify for Academic All-Big 12, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
First-team members consist of those student-athletes who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
Kansas will next head to San Antonio, Texas, at the Dominion Country Club for the Big 12 Conference Championship April 24-26. Last year, KU finished tied for fourth at the conference tourney, its best finish since 1992 Big Eight Championships when the Jayhawks placed third.
