Kansas Women’s Golf Off to Strong Start at Cardinal Cup

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – Kansas sophomore Yupaporn Kawinpakorn sits in sole possession of second place while the KU women’s golf team holds the second place position on the team leader board after the first two rounds of the Cardinal Cup at the home course of the Louisville Cardinals on Monday.

“Mook (Kawinpakorn) really led the way with very solid play during both rounds,” coach Erin O’Neil said after the day concluded. “She birdied five holes in a row on the front nine to shoot minus-4 during the second 18 and maintained it throughout the back with no problem.”

Kawinpakorn shot 140 (-4, 72-68) in Monday’s first two rounds and is one of five KU golfers in the top-25 of the field. Junior Minami Levonowich sits in a tie for 16th after carding a 148 (+4, 74-74). Freshman Pornvipa Sakdee (+5, 75-74) and junior Michelle Woods (+5, 79-70) are tied at 20th with 149. Senior Thanuttra Boonraksasat finished the day tied for 25th at 150 (+6, 74-76). Louisville sophomore Laura Restrepo leads the field at 137 (-6, 67-70) on the par-72 course.

Woods received praise from coach O’Neil for her performance through the first two rounds. “Michelle Woods also had a strong come back and had a fabulous second round this afternoon,” O’Neil said.

Coach O’Neil was very positive about the team’s play through the first two rounds. “Right now our entire line up is in the top 25 of the tournament which is a tremendous sign that we are moving in the right direction,” O’Neil said.

Host Louisville has the team lead at 567 (-9, 283-284) with Kansas (+5, 295, 286) sitting in second at 581. Kansas improved by nine strokes in the second round, catapulting the team to the second place spot.

“We are in good position going into tomorrow, but still need to stick to our game plan and finish with a solid final round,” O’Neil said.

Kansas sophomore Mackenzie Thayer coupled a strong first round 77 (+5) with a second round 82 (+10) to finish the day in a tie for 52nd. Thayer is competing as an individual.

The Cardinal Cup will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday, September 17.
