Kansas in Second Place After First Two Rounds

AUSTIN, Texas – The Kansas women’s golf team is in second place and trailing Texas Tech by a single stroke heading into Tuesday’s final round of the 2013 Challenge at Onion Creek in Austin, Texas.

KU senior Thanuttra Boonraksasat paced the Jayhawks in Monday’s first two rounds of the event at Onion Creek Original Course with a par 72. Boonraksasat sits in a tie for third place after carding an opening round 72 (+2), followed by an even-par 70 in the afternoon’s second round for a two round total 142.

Boonraksasat built on a strong performance at last week’s Marilynn Smith Invitational to continue her hot start to the 2013-14 campaign. She finished in second place at the Marilynn Smith, trailing only fellow Jayhawk senior Meghan Potee, and is in the hunt for another strong finish this week.

Sophomore Yupaporn Kawinpakorn and freshman Pornvipa Sakdee each played well Monday as both finished the day in the top-15. Kawinpakorn (74-71) is in eighth place at 145 (+5), while Sakdee is in 15th individually at 147 (+7) after shooting an even-par 70 in the morning round and a 77 (+7) in afternoon 18 holes. Potee improved five strokes in her second round with a 78-73—151 (+11) and is tied for 27th, while junior Minami Levonowich is tied for 39th after carding a 80-75—155 (+15).

Monday’s performance marks the third-straight week that the Jayhawks have finished in the top two after the first two rounds. Two weeks ago at the Cardinal Cup the Jayhawks were in second place and last week at the Marilynn Smith Invitational KU was the tournament leaders heading into the final round.

That experience should pay dividends tomorrow as the Jayhawks look to overtake Big 12 foe Texas Tech to take their second straight tournament title.

The 2013 Challenge at Onion Creek concludes Tuesday with the final round commencing at 8:30 a.m.
