Redshirt freshman Yu to make debut in Dallas

LAWRENCE Kan.—Xinyun Yu, who goes by “Melody,” a redshirt freshman from Shanghai, China, will make her Kansas golf debut when the women’s golf team travels to Dallas November 7-8 to compete in the Trinity Forest Invitational.

“We had some of the girls play this last weekend to determine the lineup and Melody earned a spot,” head coach Erin O’Neil said.

The rest of the Jayhawks competing are junior Pitsinee Winyarat in the first position, followed by sophomores Ariadna Fonseca Diaz and Victoria Chandra, freshman Yi-Tsen Chou and redshirt freshman Yu rounding the lineup out.

The Jayhawks look to have a better tournament after finishing in 14th place at the Cardinal Cup in Louisville last week.

Many of the players were too result-oriented at Louisville which put unnecessary pressure on us,” O’Neil said. “We need to get back to focusing and committing to what is in our control, playing to our strengths and taking care of the small details of playing solid golf.”

The Trinity Forest Invitational will be held at Trinity Forest Golf Club and hosted by SMU. It will be the first collegiate tournament held on the course, which opened this fall. The course is a par-72 7,450 yard links-style course.

“It is a links-style course where we will find lots of uneven lies, rolling greens and lots of native grass,” O’Neil said. It will be critical to play the correct sections of the green and to be disciplined with our decisions.”

The field is Texas-heavy with six of 13 schools competing located in the state of Texas. They include SMU, Baylor, Houston, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Texas-San Antonio (UTSA). The rest of the field includes Kansas State, Memphis, Ohio State, Michigan, Tulsa and UNLV.

The tournament begins with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start to begin all three rounds. The first two rounds will be played Monday, November 7 and the final round on Tuesday, November 8.
