Linnen Breaks Penn Relays Pole Vault Record

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – DES MOINES, Ia. –
Kanas senior Amy Linnen broke the Penn Relays record in the pole vault with an effort of 13-10. Linnen cruised to victory in the event, winning by almost five inches over second-place finisher Stacie Manual of Arkansas.
This comes just one week after Linnen set the KU record in the event with a mark of 13-11.25 at the Kansas Relays.
“It’s always a good feeling to set meet records,” Linnen said. “I will now have my name in the record books at the Penn Relays.”
The Jayhawks scored another victory at the Penn Relays on Friday. Junior Sheldon Battle dominated the men’s shot put with a winning toss of 64-08.50. Battle, who is quickly becoming one of finest throwers in KU history, now sits third on the all-time Kansas list behind legendary Jayhawks Karl Salb and Steve Wilhelm. The duo has held the top two spots since 1971. Sophomore Cody Roberts finished ninth in the event with a throw of 166-04.
“It is great for Sheldon to win at the Penn Relays, he is from New York and it is a great chance for his family to see him compete,” Kansas head coach Stanley Redwine said.
Battle also competed in the discus on Friday. He finished fourth in the event as he threw 187-03.
Rounding out the top performances at Friday’s Penn Relays events, included senior Brooklyn Hann’s fourth-place finish in the triple jump (41-10.00) and a sixth-place finish by Julius Jiles, Eric Babb, Matt Baysinger and Jeremy Mims in the sprint medley relay (3:21.39).
A few KU athletes also competed at the Drake Relays on Friday. The 4×800 relay team of Mike Rost, Cameron Schwehr, Joshy Madathil and Brandon Hodges finished third in the event with a time of 7:25.24.
“We have had some really good performances at the two meets,” Redwine added. “We can build on these performances and take them into the Big 12 Outdoor Championships.”
The Jayhawks will compete on the final day of each meet on Saturday.
