Jayhawks Place Two on C-USA All-Academic Team

May 9, 2013

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Two Kansas Jayhawk rowers joined 17 other student-athletes on the Conference USA All-Academic squad. The team is voted on by representatives from each of the 11 schools in the conference. All 11 institutions were recognized with at least one athlete while Oklahoma and Texas led the way with three honorees each.

KU junior Liz Scherer was named to the team for the second consecutive year. The Wamego, Kan., native has a 3.96 GPA and is an exercise science major. Scherer rows on KU’s First Varsity Eight and was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team for her performance on the water this season. Scherer has been previously recognized this year as an Academic All-Big 12 First Team member and Conference USA Commissioners Academic medal award winner.

Also recognized from Kansas was junior Caty Clements. Clements holds a 3.92 GPA as an accounting major. The Lamar, Mo., native is the coxswain of KU’s Second Varsity Eight boat, which finished second in the Big 12 Rowing Championships last weekend. Clements was previously recognized by the Big 12 by being named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team. Clements also received the Conference USA Commissioners Academic medal.

“We are really proud of Liz who has made this squad two years in a row,” said KU head coach Rob Catloth. “Caty has had a couple semesters of 4.0 GPAs and they both match their success on the water with success in the classroom.”

The 19 rowers recognized by Conference USA each compiled a GPA of 3.5 or better, averaging an impressive 3.88.

“Having athletes who are strong academically and well-rounded makes them better teammates and makes it more enjoyable to coach,” said Catloth.

The 2013 C-USA Rowing Championship will take place Saturday, May 18 at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
