Scherer Named Big 12 Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year

May 9, 2013

LAWRENCE, Kan. –Kansas’ Liz Scherer added to her list of academic accomplishments as she was recognized as the Big 12’s Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The award is presented to only one athlete out of over 300 rowers in the Big 12 Conference. This is the first time the award has been presented in rowing.

The junior from Wamego, Kan., has a 3.96 GPA and is an exercise science major. Scherer rows on KU’s First Varsity Eight and was named to the All-Big 12 second team for her performance on the water this season.

“Liz is academically really strong and works really hard,” said KU head coach Rob Catloth. “On top of that she is a strong athlete and is a great contributor to the program.”

Scherer has previously been recognized this year as an Academic All-Big 12 First Team member, Conference USA All-Academic performer and Conference USA Commissioners Academic medal award winner.

“It’s nice to be recognized for something that you work hard for and Liz really works hard,” said Catloth.

Kansas finished third as a team at the Big 12 Rowing Championships last weekend in Kansas City, Kan.
