Washington Downs Kansas, 1-0

PORTLAND, Ore. – McKenna Waitley’s header late in the first half lifted Washington to a 1-0 triumph over Kansas in a non-conference soccer match played Sunday at Merlo Field as part of the Portland Invitational.

The Huskies improve to 2-4 on the season while the Jayhawks fall to 0-5-1.

Washington got on the board in the first half as Waitley used her head to direct a cross in from three yards out. It was the only scoring of the contest.

Kansas put pressure on UW goalkeeper Taylor Carr, but could not gain the equalizer. Midway through the second half, sophomore Kim Boyer collected a pass from Jessica Bush seven yards out and blasted a shot that hit the crossbar.

Several minutes later, the ball eluded the Washington defense in traffic deep in the box, but the Jayhawks could not get a foot on it.

Four Jayhawks, Boyer, Nicole Cauzillo, Monica Dolinsky and Emily Strinden each had two shots. Strinden put both of her shots on net.

KU goalkeeper Colleen Quinn made three saves in defeat.

Kansas will be back in action Tuesday at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex. KU will play host to Missouri State at 5 p.m.
