Jayhawks compete in Jayhawk 15k

LAWRENCE, Kan.— Kansas women’s tennis student-athletes, Malkia Ngounoue and Maria Toran Ribes nabs Jayhawk 15k Doubles title at the Jayhawk Tennis Center Saturday morning.

In a best out of three sets, Ngounoue and Ribes completed a comeback victory over their opponents. The two dropped set one, but that was the last time Ngounoue and Ribes fell behind. The next two sets proved to be the pair’s best and gave them the 4-6, 6-2 (10-6) title win.

The Jayhawk 15k tournament is one of many that is part of a professional series organized by the ITF and United States Tennis Association (USTA). The event offers $15,000 in prize money. It is also an opportunity for players from around the world to receive ITF World Tennis and Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranking points.

Singles finals begin tomorrow, Sept 15, at 1 p.m.  The Jayhawk 15k is free of charge to the community.

Senior Maria Toran Ribes (ESP) and sophomore Malkia Ngounoue (USA) moves on in the Jayhawk 15k after Friday’s matches.

Doubles teammates Ribes and Ngounoue claimed victory over their opponents by a score of 6-3,5-7 (10-4). The win puts them in the finals of the Jayhawk 15k pro event.

Freshmen Carmen Roxana Manu (ROU) and doubles duo Malkia Ngounoue (USA) and Maria Toran Ribes (ESP) advances to day five of the Jayhawk 15k.

Manu fought her way into the quarterfinals of the singles main draw after defeating her opponent 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7).  In doubles action, senior Ribes and sophomore Ngounoue claimed a three-set victory (2-6, 6-4 [10-3]) to put them in the semifinals of the main draw.

Day three of the Jayhawk 15k ends and five Kansas women’s tennis student-athletes advance in pro event.

In the doubles main draw, Malkia Ngounoue (USA) and Maria Toran Ribes (ESP) advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating their opponents in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. Doubles teammates Luniuska Delgado (VEN) and Oleksandra Gorchanyuk (CAN) will see the court for their quarterfinal match Thursday afternoon.

Still alive in singles, freshman Carmen Roxana Manu (ROU) moved on to the round of 16 after opponent retired due to an injury.

The University of Kansas completes day two of the Jayhawk 15 on Tuesday. In the singles main draw, sophomore Malkia Ngounoue (USA) awaits for her first match of the event while freshman Carmen Roxana Manu (ROU) won her final match in qualifiers to move on to the main draw.

Manu and Ngounoue begins their first-round singles main draw matches Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m.

In addition, Ngounoue teamed up with senior Maria Toran Ribes (ESP) for doubles main draw. The pair’s round 1 match begins Wednesday at 2 p.m. Freshmen Luniuska Delgado (VEN) and Oleksandra Gorchanyuk (CAN) also competed as a duo. The freshmen pair claimed a 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory over KU teammates Julia Deming (USA) and Sonia Smagina (RUS) to advance to the quarterfinals.

Day one of the Jayhawk 15k ends and five University of Kansas women’s tennis athletes compete in the pro event at the Jayhawk Tennis Center Monday.

In the 32-player singles qualifying draw, freshmen Luniuska Delgado, Vasiliki Karvouni, Carmen Roxana Manu, Oleksandra Gorchanyuk and sophomore Julia Deming each competed in the first round of play. Delgado and Manu both remain in the bracket advancing to the final round of qualifiers. For them to move into the main draw, they must win out the final round.

Also taking the court tomorrow is senior Maria Toran Ribes and sophomores Malkia Ngounoue and Sonia Smagina. Each earned a spot in the main draw ahead of the qualifying round.

Tuesday afternoon also begins the doubles main draw where three KU doubles team are on the docket.
