Jayhawks Take Hot Streak to South Carolina

Live Stats

LAWRENCE, Kan. – With three consecutive top-two finishes, including a tournament victory to begin the spring season, the Kansas men’s golf team will travel to Awendaw, South Carolina and compete in the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate April 3-5 at Bulls Bay Golf Club. Along with another top-two placing, the Jayhawks will also seek their fourth tournament victory of the season on the par-72, 7,363-yard course, which would set a new program record for most tournament titles in a season.

“It’s a great field this week,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said. “It resembles a typical regional field, so it will be a good test to see how we stand against some very good team.”

The group of Jayhawks that will be representing Kansas at this event is the same five guys that Bermel has stuck with thus far in the spring season. Leading the way for KU is senior Ben Welle, who is looked upon as one of the best golfers in the nation, as his 70.96 scoring average is currently ranks tied for 30th in NCAA Division I. His two individual titles on the season is also the most by a Jayhawk since Chris Gilbert accomplished the feat in 2013-14.

As Welle’s senior counterpart, Connor Peck has been one of the team’s most consistent golfers all season long. His 71.85 scoring average ranks second on the team and leads the Jayhawks in percent of rounds counted at 92.59. Peck has also lead the Jayhawks in scoring twice this season as well.

Making his 10th appearance of the season is junior Chase Hanna (72.56 average per round score). His 10 rounds of under par ranks third on the team, as does his five top-20 finishes on the season. Sophomore Daniel Hudson (72.88) has four top-20 placings in 2015-16.

Rounding off the Jayhawks who are competing this week is freshman Charlie Hillier (72.37). Along with his four top-10 finishes, the rookie phenome has participated in all nine events this season, where he has finished under par in four of those events, including each of the last three.

“I’m looking forward to the great competition and seeing how we can compete with these teams,” Bermel said.

Joining Kansas at Bulls Bay Golf Club is a 13-team field that consists of University of Akron, Charleston Southern, Duke, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina State, Wake Forrest and Wofford.
