Welle Leads Jayhawks on Day Two at Big 12 Championship

TRINITY, Texas – Kansas sophomore Ben Welle led the Jayhawks on the second day of 2013 Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship play with a third round score of 73 (+1) Saturday as the Jayhawks sit in eighth at Whispering Pines Golf Club.
Welle’s four birdies on the day helped bring his three round score to 220 (+4) as he is in a tie for ninth in the 45-golfer field heading into Sunday’s final round. Behind Welle’s performance the Jayhawks ended their day with a 302 (+14), bringing their three-round total to 900 (+36).
“They were pretty tough conditions today with the wind, but we hung in there fairly well,” head coach Jamie Bermel said. “Hole 11 we played six-over par and that really hurt our round. Ben Welle and Chase Hanna carried us again as they were huge today.”
Kansas freshman Chase Hanna continued his dominance on the course he carded three birdies leading to a 74 (+2) for the second straight round. Hanna sits in a tie for ninth with a three round total of 220 (+4).
Senior Ryley Haas finished in third for KU Saturday as he carded a 5-over par, 77, which included three birdies. Haas is currently in 31st with a two day score of 227 (+11).
Sophomore Connor Peck added his score to the Jayhawks total as he shot a 78 (+6) during the third round, with two birdies. Peck is in a tie for 41st with a three round score of 236 (+20).
Junior Logan Philley started his day on a strong note as he went even on the front nine. Philley struggled on the back as he ended his day with an 81 (+9). Philley is in 44th with a three round card of 239 (+23).
Texas Tech currently leads the Big 12 Championship following a day Saturday score of 289 (+1) brining its tournament total to 866 (+2). Texas trails Texas Tech by just one stroke with a three-round score of 867 (+3).
TCU’s Jullien Brun leads the league championship with a three round score of 211 (-5). He has a three stroke lead over Texas’ Beau Hossler’s 214 (-2).
The Big 12 Championship will conclude with 18 final holes on Sunday, April 27.
