Kansas Freshman Brock Drogosch Qualifies for U.S. Amateur
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas redshirt freshman men’s golfer Brock Drogosch shot a 66 Tuesday and a two-round 133 (67-66) at Orange County National Golf Center – Panther Lake Course in Winter Garden, Florida to qualify for the 2014 U.S. Amateur.
Drogosch, from Windermere, Florida, which is about 15 minutes from Panther Lake Course, placed third in the 71-golfer field behind Sam Horsfield from England (131) and Joey Petronio from Orlando (132). The top three finishers from the qualifier advanced to the 2014 U.S. Amateur to be played August 11-14 at the Atlanta Athletic Club (Highlands Course) in Atlanta, Georgia.
“I was tied for third going into the day and was paired in the second to last group, so I didn’t know what was going on behind me,” said Drogosch who had attempted to qualify for the U.S. Amateur three times prior. “I bogeyed the first hole today and made a birdie on the second hole which settled me down and I played really well after that. I had a pretty good feeling when I shot 66 that I was in. Coming down the stretch I was just holding it together. I birdied the last hole, which was tough to do.”
A total of 6,803 golfers entered qualifying tournaments for the 2014 U.S. Amateur. Drogosch is one of 312 who will advance to the event. He will compete in two 18-hole rounds of stroke play on Aug. 11 and 12 with the top 64 advancing to match play competition Aug. 13-17.
“I’m really excited,” Drogosch said. “It (the U.S. Amateur) is at the Atlanta Athletic Club and they have hosted a lot of major championships there. It should be really cool.”
Drogosch has seen his game improve following his redshirt season at Kansas.
“I’ve been working really hard and I’ve been seeing results this summer,” Drogosch said on his play this summer. “Today and yesterday were the best I’ve ever played. I had some good breaks but played really well all the way through with the long game and short game.”
