LAWRENCE, Kan. – Behind sophomore Chase Hanna, the Kansas men’s golf team will open the 2014-15 season traveling to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to compete in the Wolverine Intercollegiate at U-M Golf Course on September 6-7.

“I am excited that we have our top four players from last year all back and looking forward to starting off the year strong,” Hanna said. “I think we can accomplish a lot.”

Hanna led KU in scoring at seven of the team’s 11 events with a season scoring average 73.24 per round in 2013-14. The Leawood, Kansas, native had three top-20 finishes his freshman year.

“Chase does a lot of things well on the golf course,” KU third-year head coach Jamie Bermel said. “He didn’t qualify number one, but that is qualifying. Sometimes some guys like Chase probably don’t play so well in qualifying, but when the gun goes off and it is time to compete in the real tournament, I am sure he will be ready to go.”

Hanna had an outstanding summer where he qualified and competed in the 2014 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. As the 2013 Kansas Amateur champion, Hanna entered the 2014 event’s match play as the No. 1 seed yet lost in the semifinals.

“I played pretty well in the qualifier and it was just an awesome experience to get to play in such a big tournament in my home state,” Hanna said. “I didn’t play quite the way I wanted to play, but still a great experience and something I learned a lot from.”

KU redshirt senior Bryce Brown, freshman Daniel Hudson, redshirt freshman Brock Drogosch and junior Ben Welle also had solid summers.  Brown won the Nebraska Match Play Championship, while Hudson and Drogosch qualified and played in the 2014 U.S. Amateur. Welle won the Pine to Palm golf tournament in Minnesota in August.

“I am excited to see how these guys have progressed over the summer,” Bermel said. “We have a new person in there, Brock Drogosch, who has never played one round of golf at KU. He led our qualifier. Maybe he is our guy this year.”

Hanna, Drogosch, Welle and Brown will be joined by senior Logan Philley and junior Connor Peck in Wolverine Intercollegiate. Brown will be competing as an individual in Michigan.

“Like I tell these guys every time we compete, we are there to win it,” Bermel said. “That is our number one goal.  When we leave town, we are there to win the golf tournament.  That expectation hasn’t changed in my 23 years of coaching and that is my expectation for this weekend.”

The Wolverine Intercollegiate will be played on a 6,704-yard, par-71 course at the U-M Golf Course with 36 holes on Sept 6 and 18 holes on Sept. 7. Kansas will be competing against Eastern Michigan, host Michigan, Penn State, Rutgers, Wichita State, Wisconsin, Xavier, Harvard, Fresno State and San Jose State.
