Day One Results

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Ben Welle continued the Kansas men’s golf team’s hot season start after day one of the Ram Masters Invitational.  At the completion of the first two rounds of the event, the Jayhawks finished the day just one stroke behind host-Colorado State for the overall lead with scores of 280-281–561 (+1).

“We played well today.  We let a few slip away late, but overall a pretty good start to the event. The third round is going to be a lot of fun, CSU on their home course will be tough to beat but that’s why we play,” head coach Jamie Bermel said.

As the two teams battled each other for the top spot on team leaderboard, so did Welle for the individual leaderboard.  Heading into tomorrow’s final round, the Kansas senior finds himself sitting on top of the leaderboard, carding back-to-back scores of 67 (-6) in the first two rounds.

Of the 88 golfers participating in the event, Welle also finds himself leading all players in birdies recorded with 11.  His average par-four score of 3.80, leads all golfers as well.

“Ben had a great day for us today.  (He) made a double bogey on his first hole of his second round and really showed a lot of maturity and poise to put together a great second round in tough conditions,” Bermel said about Welle.

Yet, Welle was not the only Kansas golfer featured in the top-10.   Junior Chase Hanna and freshman Charlie Hillier are both tied for seventh, after shooting a 142 (+2).  The teammates shared a virtually identical day, as they shot an even-par, 70, in the opening round and carded a two-over, 72, in the afternoon.

Sitting just behind Hanna and Hillier, is Kansas’ other senior, Connor Peck.  Coming off of a top-10 finish in last week’s Rod Myers Invitational, Peck currently sits tied for 11th, heading into Tuesday’s final round.  He carded scores of 73-70–143 (+3), which included six birdies and 22 pars on Monday.

Kansas freshman Drake Hull also finds himself amongst the top-25, placing tied for 22nd.  In his collegiate debut, Hull posted a 76 (+6) in round one, but then improved his score to move up 37 spots, after shooting even-par 70 in the second round.

Rounding off the Jayhawks squad was sophomore Daniel Hudson, who played well in the morning by carding a 73 (+3).  He hopes to recover from his round two score of 78 (+8) in the final round of the event.

“I know the guys will be excited for the challenge, and I’m looking forward to a great day of competition,” Bermel said about tomorrow’s round.

The final round of the Ram Masters Invitational is slated for Tuesday, Sept. 22, with first tee-off at 8 a.m. MT.  Stats and live scoring can be followed at golfstatresults.com.
