MADISON, Wis. – Behind junior Connor Peck and his top-five finish, the Kansas men’s golf team sits tied for fourth after the first round of the Badger Invitational at the University Ridge Golf Course Sunday.
Sam Houston State leads the event after shooting a 5-under 283. Sam Houston State is four shots ahead of Marquette (-1, 287). Toledo is in third with a 4-over 282. Kansas is tied for fourth with USC Upstate at 6-over 292 on the par-72 course.
“We started out ok today and then made some careless mistakes, but recovered coming in,” KU head coach Jamie Bermel said.
Peck led KU by carding five birdies to finish tied for sixth with a first round 71 (-1) in the 79-golfer field. He will enter the second three strokes behind the individual leader Patrick Sanchez of Marquette.
“Connor played pretty steady today, really efficient golf. He seems to be getting better every week,” Bermel said.
KU sophomore Chase Hanna finished the first round tied for seventeen shooting a 73 (+1). Freshman Daniel Hudson and Gary Daoust shot a 75 (+3) and are tied for 32nd. Playing as an individual, redshirt junior David Auer shot a 79 (+7). Junior Ben Welle is tied for 66th with a first round 81 (+9).
“Surprisingly, Ben Welle didn’t have a good day. I hope he bounces back tomorrow,” Bermel said.
