Hanna Leads Jayhawks as Kansas Ends Day One Tied for Sixth

MADISON, Wis. – Kansas freshman Chase Hanna shot a one-under 71 on the first round of the Badger Invitational to lead the KU men’s golf team to a sixth-place one-round score of 290 at the University Ridge Golf Course Sunday.

Hanna shot a 71 (-1) in the first round, which placed him in a tie for eighth in the individual leaderboard.

“Chase posted a solid score,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said. “He seems to be getting more and more comfortable with college golf.”

KU sophomore Jackson Foth, junior Stan Gautier and sophomore Ben Welle each posted solid first rounds of 73 (+1) which put them in a tie for 27th in the 77-golfer field. KU junior transfer Logan Philley competed in his second tournament of the year and carded a 78 (+6) which put him in 66th in the individual standings.

“I thought we played decent today, with the exception of a few holes that cost us dearly,” Bermel said. “We counted two triples and a careless double. I think if we can eliminate those mistakes on Monday we could post a good score. There were perfect playing conditions today and for the exception of those three scores we took advantage of the weather.”

South Carolina led the event with a team 282 (-6), four strokes ahead of USC Upstate’s 286 (-2). Kansas was in a tied for sixth at (+2) after its 290 in the 14-team field. The Jayhawks were tied with Austin Peay.

The Badger Invitational continues Monday with 18 holes and concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday.
