Hanna and Foth Lead Kansas Men’s Golf to Second-Place Finish

MADISON, Wis. – Kansas men’s golf closed out the Badger Invitational in second place behind a top-five finish from freshman Chase Hanna and a top-10 finish from sophomore Jackson Foth Tuesday.

Hanna led the Jayhawks in final round at University Ridge Golf Course with an even-par 72, putting him in a tie for fifth and giving him a three-round total of (216, E). Right behind Hanna was Foth, who finished in a tie for 10th, recording a day three score of 75 (+3), bringing his three-day total to 220 (+4).

“It’s great to have a freshman play well, especially as early as his fourth, fifth and sixth collegiate rounds,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said. “And I’m happy for Jackson. He got in the lineup a little bit last year and now he’s really starting to feel a little more comfortable out there. He hits the ball pretty high and it was windy the past couple days, but he managed to stay in there.”

KU sophomore Ben Welle also contributed to the Jayhawks runner-up finish as he posted a third round 76 (+4) putting him in a tie for 22nd, with a total score of 223 (+7). Junior Stan Gautier recorded a total score of 226 (+10) following a third round 78 (+6). Junior transfer Logan Philley found his groove in the final day as he carded a 73 (+1), second best score of the day for the Jayhawks, which brought his three day score to 227 (+11) placing him in a tie for 41st.

“We played pretty well for 15 holes and just kind of stumbled home,” Bermel said. “We were around one or two over with three holes to go, and we made some bad doubles and a couple bogeys. But overall, with tough conditions, we played pretty solid.”

South Carolina ended up leading the tournament from wire to wire after posting a third round score of 291 (+3), bringing its three-day total to 856. Kansas trailed the leaders by 24 strokes, putting them in sole possession of second place with a three round total of 880 (+16). The second place finish by the Jayhawks marks their first fall top-two finishes since 2010.

Up next for the Jayhawks will be the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate in Carmel, Ind., Oct. 14-15.
