MADISON, Wis. – Starting off the season strong, the Kansas men’s golf team fired a 4-over 292 and sits in third place after day one of the Badger Invitational Sunday. Kansas finds itself five strokes back heading into the second of three rounds on Monday at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisconsin.
“We need to be sharper the next two days,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said. “We had way too many unforced errors and sloppy mistakes. I thought the guys settled in and played better in our second nine and hopefully we will be better in the next two days.”
KU struggled to find its footing on the front nine, carding a 7-over par. The Jayhawks bounced back on the back nine shooting 3-under and trail second-place UAB by one shot and tourney leader Illinois State by five strokes heading into Monday’s second round.
Senior Jake Scarrow is competing individually for Kansas and led the team with a 3-under par 69 in his opening round. Scarrow birdied six holes, four of which were on the front nine. His 3-under only trails tourney leader Tony Jiang of Rutgers who is a 5-under after shooting a 67.
“Jake was solid today,” Bermel said. “He was three over after two holes and fought all the way back to three under. I’m very happy he could turn it around and finish strong.”
Jayhawk sophomores Drew Shepherd and Harry Hillier both shot even par 72 and are in a six-way tie for ninth in the 78-golfer field.
“The team got off to a slow start, but played better on our second nine.” Bermel said. “I thought Drew (Shepherd) was very steady today and managed an even-par round.”
One shot behind Shepherd and Harry Hillier is senior Charlie Hillier who carded a 1-over 73. Senior Andy Spencer is tied for 26th after shooting a 3-over 75 in his opening round.
Day 2 action will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday. Live scoring available at https://www.birdiefire.com/tournament/48918/.
