Hagan claims 2018-19 Marlene Mawson Exemplary Student-Athlete Award

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas soccer senior Grace Hagan was recognized on Saturday night for her well-rounded excellence on the field, in the classroom and in the community as the 2018-19 recipient of the Marlene Mawson Exemplary Student-Athlete Award.

The award is presented by Kansas Athletics to one senior female student-athlete each year who played an integral role on her respective team and demonstrated strong character and leadership qualities, while also being a strong competitor in the classroom and in the field of play. Hagan received the award from Dr. Marlene Mawson inside Allen Fieldhouse during a break in the action of the KU women’s basketball game against Texas on Saturday.

Hagan is the first KU soccer student-athlete to win the award, now in its 12th year.

Dr. Mawson was appointed to a full-time physical education faculty position with the added responsibility of initiating an intercollegiate women’s sports program in 1968. In addition to directing the program, Dr. Mawson coached women’s basketball, volleyball, softball and field hockey during her first three years at KU. For 22 years, Dr. Mawson was a professor and administrator at the University of Kansas.

Hagan is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree and a regular on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll during her impressive career as a student-athlete. She recently concluded one of the best careers in KU soccer history. This past season she posted a team-leading 62 shots, scored seven goals and added five assists this season to become just the second Jayhawk in program history to tally 25 goals and 15 assists in a career. Hagan’s 25 career goals ranks fifth in school history and her 17 assists were the seventh-most by a Jayhawk.

The Wichita, Kansas, native is a two-time First Team All-Big 12 member and a three-time NSCAA All-Region selection. During her four seasons on the KU front line, she helped the Jayhawks to a pair of second round appearances in the NCAA Tournament, a Big 12 Tournament final, and seven wins over top-25 opponents.

Hagan’s numerous extracurricular activities included medical missions to Tanzania and Ecuador, membership in Phi Delta Epsilson Pre-Medical fraternity and volunteering at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Hagan is currently working toward a pre-med degree as she pursues entry into medical school.
