LAWRENCE, Kan. – University of Kansas rowing capped off another successful Jayhawk Jamboree according to plan – executing on key races they prepared for during fall practices while welcoming an estimated 9,000 fans to Burcham Park throughout the day.

The fourth installment of the Jayhawk Jamboree played host to a record number of boat entries from men’s and women’s varsity and club teams from across the region, including Big 12 opponents Kansas State and Oklahoma. The thousands of fans were treated to concessions from six food truck vendors and live music during the event.

“It’s a great day to be a Jayhawk,” Kansas head coach Rob Catloth said. “This year we had approximately 40 more boats in the race than we did last year. There were a lot of tight races in a field that included three Big 12 teams and a Big Ten team. The level or racing here is pretty high and we are proud of how things went today.”

Headlining the day for Kansas on the water was a pair of first-place finishes in open pair, double and singles race, and the novice four race.

Juniors Kaelyn Thierolf and Olivia Loney made up the pair that took home gold in the open pair, double and singles race with a time of 15:53.31.

“The weather conditions really enabled us to have a great race today – flat water in a great temperature sets up for success,” Thierolf said. “And also to have such great support by all our friends, family and fans really helped us do well today.”

Freshmen Reese Arnold, Mary Margaret Rodgers, Amelia Moore and Kate Mizell made their collegiate debut with a first-place finish in the novice four race. Sophomore coxswain Katie McWhirter helped lead the group of newcomers in the Amelia boat to a time of 15:38.21.

Finishing right behind the Amelia boat was the Mawson’s Mission boat in second place with a time of 16:15.6 in the novice four race. The all-freshmen Mawson’s Mission boat features coxswain Riley Varuska, Kaitlyn Finger, Madison Ruffalo, Hailey Borden and Baylee Page.

In total, the Jayhawks took home 11 top-10 finishes in the ‘smaller’ boats of four or less rowers.

“In the small boats, which we have been training in a lot this fall, we did really well,” Catloth said. “In the eight boats, we were right in there where we want to be with our conference opponents. We are excited about where we are starting for the first race of the year — it’s all about getting ready for spring.”

KU’s first varsity eight, led by senior coxswain Kenzie Obrochta, finished third in the 2,000 meter race and second-place in the 300 meter sprint. Tulsa finished first in both races. KU’s Sue Anderson boat features junior Angie Allen, junior BriAnna Dittberner, junior Kaelyn Thierolf, junior Olivia Loney, senior Jordan Helms, junior Margret Winter, sophomore Peyton Anderson and sophomore Meghan Karoly

“Our first varsity eight has a lot of returners – teammates who have worked hard over the summer and through the fall season,” Thierolf said of her first varsity eight comrades. “We are a lot stronger physically than we were last year and we are looking forward to showing what we can do towards the end of the season.”

The Jayhawk Jamboree is a head race competition, meaning boats race against a time trial rather than side-by-side against their opponent.
