Smagina advances to ITA All-American Championships qualifying draw

TULSA, Okla.β€”Kansas sophomore Sonia Smagina advanced to the qualifying draw of the Saint Francis Health Systems ITA All-American Championships Sunday.

Smagina won three matches this weekend to advance. On Sunday, she earned her spot in the qualifying draw after a dominate performance over Alana Wolfberg (Oklahoma State), winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Smagina improved to 5-1 this fall.

Smagina will face Syracuse’s Polina Kozyreva to kick off the qualifiers Monday.

Malkia Ngounoue and Maria Toran Ribes both dropped their final match of the day, which prevents them from moving forward in singles action.

Ngounoue fell to Akanksha Bhan from Columbia, but did not go out without a fight in the 6-4, 7-6 (8) battle. Ribes dropped a heartbreaker against Iowa State opponent, Thasaporn Naklo. Ribes bested Naklo taking the first set, 3-6, but could not keep the lead as Naklo took the last two sets (6-4, 6-4).

Ngounoue and Ribes now look ahead to Monday and Tuesday as they compete to win matches as a pair to qualify for the doubles main draw that begins play Wednesday, Oct. 9.
