Smagina falls short of main draw at ITA All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla.— Kansas’ Sonia Smagina fell short on Tuesday afternoon at the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships.

Smagina finished her tournament run in the second round of the qualifying draw. The sophomore won five straight matches to advance to the fourth day of competition. Smagina’s streak ended after her 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1 loss to Chloe Beck from Duke.

Doubles partners, Malkia Ngounoue and Maria Toran Ribes, concluded their run in the tournament after defeating Tulsa’s Lain Benedejcic and Megan Hopton (8-4) on Monday in their consolation match.

The Jayhawks will return to action Oct 17-22 at the ITA Regionals in Norman, Oklahoma and on Oct. 21-27 for the Austin 15k in Texas.
