Rychagova advances to main draw at ITA All-American

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Kansas junior Anastasia Rychagova earned a spot in the main draw after a singles win Wednesday at the Riviera ITA Women’s All-American in Pacific Palisades, California at the Riviera Tennis Club.

Rychagova defeated the No. 4 seeded Andrea Lazaro of Florida International, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the main draw. Rychagova is now the first Kansas player to compete in the bracket since Eveline Hamers lost in the quarterfinals in 1990.

“(Wednesday) was another great day for both Nina (Khmelnitckaia) and Nas (Rychagova),” said assistant coach Caroline Lilley. “This being their first tournament of the fall it is important to be pushed so we know what we need to continue to develop. Nas is playing and competing in such a professional manner. I couldn’t be happier for her as she continues to commit to being the best she can be each and every match.”

The No. 8 seeded duo of Rychagova and junior Nina Khmelnitckaia took down Alyssa Tobita and Rifanty Khafiani of Oregon, 8-3. Competing against Vanderbilt’s team of Emma Kurtz and Christina Rosca for a spot in the doubles main draw, the Jayhawk pair led, 4-1, and 5-2, but ultimately fell to the Commodores, 8-5.

Thursday, Rychagova will face Fernanda Contreras of Vanderbilt at 3:30 p.m., CT.
