Rychagova named co-Big 12 Player of the Week

LAWRENCE, Kan. – After accumulating a 4-0 record against two Top-50 opponents this past weekend, Kansas senior Anastasia Rychagova has been named the co-Big 12 Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

The Moscow, Russia, native’s perfect record during the weekend consisted of two victories in both singles and doubles, helping the Jayhawks sweep Arkansas and Air Force.

Rychagova’s award is the second for her and the third overall during the 2019 season for Kansas tennis. Jayhawk sophomore Plobrung Plipuech earned the first Big 12 Player of the Week award of 2019 on Jan. 25 after her own perfect record (4-0) at the Orlando Invitational. This is the fifth time in Rychagova’s career she has been honored by the league with a weekly award; she was also Big 12 Player of the Week on Jan. 19, 2018; Feb. 20, 2018; Feb. 3, 2016; and March 16, 2016.

Rychagova and her doubles partner, freshman Sonia Smagina, are currently ranked No. 51 in the nation by the Intercollege Tennis Association (ITA). Saturday, the pair bested Arkansas’ Thea Rice and Lauren Alter, 6-4. Then Sunday, the Jayhawk duo defeated Air Force’s Ashleigh Harvey and Meredith Jones, 6-2.

Last weekend, the No. 47-ranked Rychagova stayed undefeated for the spring season in singles, beating  Arkansas’ No. 81 Tatum Rice, 7-6(4), 6-1, and Air Force’s TJ Fumagalli, 6-0, 6-3, to bring her 2019 singles record to 8-0.
