Cooper finishes fifth in discus at Commonwealth Games

GOLD COAST, Queensland – Kansas track & field alumnus Mitch Cooper finished fifth in the discus at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia on Friday, representing his home country of Australia.
 
A member of the Jayhawk track & field squad from 2014-17, Cooper’s fifth-place finish came with a mark of 60.40 meters (198-2 ft.) on his final attempt of the day. Fouling on three of his six attempts, Cooper put together throws of 50.39 meters (194-10 ft.), and 59.10 meters (193-11 ft.) on his second and fourth throws, respectively, before coming up with his fifth-place toss.
 
Cooper qualified for Friday’s final by finishing seventh overall in the qualifying round on Thursday, hitting a mark of 59.68 meters (195-9 ft.).
 
The Burpengary, Queensland native concluded his Jayhawk career in 2017 with a sixth-place finish in the discus at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, earning First Team All-America honors. Prior to his First Team All-America performance, Cooper won the Big 12 discus crown and broke his own Kansas school record with a throw of 63.98 meters (209-11 ft.).
