Woodland leads U.S. Open heading into final round
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Kansas alumnus Gary Woodland shot a 2-under 69 Saturday in the third round of the 119th U.S. Open and will carry a one-shot lead into the final round Sunday, sitting at 11-under after 54 holes. Woodland is vying to become the first Kansas alumnus to win a major golf championship.
The 2007 KU graduate holds a one-shot lead over Justin Rose and a four-shot lead over two-time defending U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka, Louis Oosthuizen and Chez Reavie who all sit third at 7-under.
Following a historic Friday that saw Woodland shoot a 6-under 65 to take the 36-hole lead into the weekend, he continued his impressive play on one of golf’s biggest stages. He kicked off Saturday’s round going 2-under thru the first six holes to reach 11-under for the tournament with help from birdies on the par-4 fourth and par-5 sixth holes.
After a bogey on the difficult par-4 eighth hole, Woodland got the shot back with a birdie on the 388-yard par-4 11th. From there, he closed out the round with six-straight pars to finish off a score of 69, including an impressive par save on the 14th hole via a 43-foot putt.
